SSD's w/ Gigabyte mobo - BIOS Smart Error?

Just curious as I could not find any info via Google. The OCZ SSD's (I have an Agility 2 60GB) seem to have an issue with a SMART error on boot with Gigabyte mobo's. It hangs the system for 3-5 seconds after booting up and then boots up as normal. Couple of the other sites out there, including the OCZ forums, have links to Beta BIOS's that fix newer Gigabyte mobo's but for older ones like my GA-P35-DS3L looks to be out of luck for an update since it is EOL and they do not write for it anymore.

Question is, my other machine has a newer GA-P55M-UD2 which there is a Beta BIOS available that should remove the error, but I'm not big on a BETA BIOS and it is not officially up at Gigabyte's website.

Is this SMART error with Gigabyte mobo's only with OCZ SSD's or is it common with all SSD's and Gigabyte mobo's? I was considering an Intel X25-M 80GB for my newer machine as that one is the stable machine that I don't mess around with, but don't feel like upgrading it until an official BIOS is released from Gigabyte if the error is common with all SSD's.

The error does not appear to be anything more than a 3-5 second annoyance, but once you get used to the speed of the SSD after the system is up, this lag in the boot becomes annoying.

Thanks, Bill

At the moment, as far as i'm aware it only affects SandForce based drives with firmware 1.11. In that firmware a SMART attribute was introduced correctly in the SSD, but Gigabyte got it wrong in the version of the SATA BIOS they use (1.20E), hence why Gigabyte are fixing their BIOS.

I would think this will affect all SSDs that implement that SMART attribute in the future.

i have a gigabyte EP-45 DQ6 and a 80gb G2 SSD and have no problems at all with it

That's what I wanted to know. I didn't think about the Sandforce controller. That makes sense.

I was hoping that the G3 would be coming out in Q4 to drive down the G2 prices, but looks like I may just have to pick up a G2 if I want to upgrade before next year.

Thanks, Bill
