Good day computer geeks! My brother told me that he's planning to "upgrade" our current drive (HDD) to SSD before I give my go signal I just wanted to know first the advantages/disadvantages between SSD and HDD.

There are very few downsides to an SSD, the cost/capacity being one relative to HDDs, but they are no where near as costly as they were say 3 years ago.

Just make sure you match your anticipated capacity... you need to leave about 30% free space on an SSD to allow it to perform properly.

When you start shopping for SSD's check back in here with what you have found and we will give you our .02 worth... :)

As of now we're still debating for the other specs. Will share the outcome probably next week. ;)

SSD : Fast, expensive, low disk space, dies after a certain number of writes but is less likely to fail randomly like a HDD will.

HDD : Slower than SSDs, cheap, more disk space, no write limitations but can fail randomly at any time. HDDs in a proper raid setup will give you good reliability and half decent performance no matter how much you write to it and be the best bang for the buck per GB.

Personally I use SSDs for OS and raided HDDs for data, and single HDDs for "cold storage" backups (treat them like tapes, basically. They're cheaper than tapes).
