SSD secure erase over usb?

Hacp

Is there a tool that allows me to secure erase over usb? both my laptops only support ahci mode. No option in bios to disable it. I don't own a desktop.

None that I know of, but in one laptop that only supported achi mode I was able to secure erase by hot plug/unplug the SATA drive. I booted gparted off a usb stick, ran hddparm to secure-erase which said the drive was 'frozen'. I unplugged and plugged the SATA drive, re-ran hdparm and secure-erase worked.

However, I only recommend running secure-erase as a drive wipe for SSDs before you plan on selling it.

No, because secure erase is designed to work only over ATA (it is an ATA drive command, after all). I had this problem when I was trying to "dispose of" a laptop hard drive.

To achieve the same effect as with the secure erase, just format the drive and then fill it to capacity with some insecure stuff (like multiple copies of Mickey Mouse DVD iso). When the large file does not fit any more, top up with smaller files.
This can be done over USB and, when done, the only recoverable stuff are Mickey Mouse DVDs.
