The laptop I'm working on doesn't have an option for switching from ide to ahci. its an older laptop from about 3 yrs ago that was running vista. just wondering if running in ide mode will harm the ssd in any way vs ahci?

No problem. It will be slow on benchmarks, but will be so much faster then a platter drive in real life.

Absolutely no problem. The one in my XP-box should have died a couple of times if there where any...

One issue is garbage collection, you really should TRIM manually from time to time... :)

No, you don't need AHCI for TRIM.

Nope, you need to use either the "standard" MS AHCI or Intel/AMD AHCI/RAID driver for TRIM to get passed to the drive...

This particular box runs XP for compatibility (16bit software) reasons and XP/Vista does not support TRIM...

TRIM is an ATA protocol command; it has nothing to do with AHCI or IDE.

...which has absolutely nothing to do with AHCI. TRIM is dependent on OS support, and neither of those OSes have it.

Though to be fair I did assume he was running Windows 7.

"TRIM is non-specific to either SATA controller mode, and will work equally well in both IDE and AHCI-mode. Benchmark Reviews will soon publish a detailed report that illustrates the recovery levels for each SSD controller tested here. "

Well then, I stand corrected... you learn something every day... :D:thumbsup:

So I don't need to worry about TRIM then. I'll be installing w8 on it. Thanks for th info. There's a new BIOS update for the laptop but I don't have a floppy drive and I'm scared to brick this lol

No, unless your SSD is made by OCZ. Then it just might die no matter the mode.

By the way, since you mention compatibility issues I thought I'd share something. I have a whole host of DOS type programs that were compiled on the Microsoft C 6.0 compiler. (Not Visual C 6.0, just C 6.0, from 1990.) I was able to make all this stuff work on windows 7. With minimal effort my old DOS code all compiles and runs just fine. It uses 16 bit libraries and everything.

Just watch out for 128GB SSDs that is too small, cuz you start off with 110GB install OS install 8 and you have 30GB left,,,,, gl coupdeloop
Honestly, where do you make this shit up?

By your maths Windows 8 takes up 80GB. The official system requirements for Windows 8 64bit is 20GB. Please explain the 60GB discrepancy.

I think he's trolling with every key stroke. I'm kinda surprised he hasn't been banned yet or something. I don't know if anyone even takes any of his posts seriously. Hope not for their sake.
