Hi,

I'm building a server specifically for game hosting so I've been going through some setups for dedicated servers in which I'm so fixated on using raid for some reason hoping it will give that touch of performance. So far I have this

Intel E3-1270
2x 160GB SSD 300GB( The 300GB is for booting the OS)

2x 300GB SAS in raid 0/1 one or the other and 1x SSD 160GB

I have thought about using the Intel 510/520 series drives but heard it had lots of BSOD and unsteadiness and not meant for a production server, Can you give some experience with these.

Another issue I've heard is that the 1270 does not perform well with 32GB, and others have suggested to go with 24GB as a max solution.

What kind of game server(s) are you running, and what OS? I haven't looked at any game servers in *ages* but I though they were relatively lightweight programs. (Taking much less horsepower than the game client.) I wouldn't expect that a super-fast SSD would have much impact on server speed, except for boot-up. Also, isn't 24GB or 32GB of ram overkill?

Are you planning on placing this server in a colocation facility with a serious internet connection, using it on a LAN, or leaving it behind a residential network connection?

Games would vary from minecraft which uses up lots of ram and somewhat cpu, to source games: Counter-Strike: Source, team fortress 2. The OS would be windows. The server will be in a DC.

The E3-1270 or any other Xeon will no problem at all with 32GB of ram....provided you are using ECC unbuffered ram compatible with the particular board you are using. There is no reason to avoid 32GB.

I'll be using supertalent, and Supermicro X9SCL+-F socket 1155 server board, 4x DDR3 DIMM slots, now seeing as 32GB requires UDIMM. went with supertalent since other brands RMA'S.
