I would like to know which one of the new ssd have hardware trim or gc. I want an SSD for and older machine with XP. I was thinking of the Mushkin Callisto:hmm:

Most SSD's these days have a GC tool, look up reviews on specific models if you want to know about it's GC.

I don't think Sandforce-based drives like the Callisto are known for their garbage collection. I know I've read that some of the Kingston drives have aggressive GC, and they also tend to be inexpensive. You probably wouldn't notice the somewhat lower performance on an older machine anyway.

I have a Callisto and it's a fine drive. Any modern SSD should work perfectly in IDE mode but you won't get AHCI features like hot swapping or NCQ (no big deal for everyday use).

 Sandforce drives do do background GC, but are not as aggressive as some of the Kingston and Toshiba ones. Sandforce is of course faster than those controllers.

If the machine is going to be used with XP for a long time, I'd say to get one of the Kingston SSDNow V+ drives. If you plan to upgrade fairly soon, go ahead and get a Sandforce like the Corsair Force or Mushkin Callisto Deluxe.
