I'm installing a PNY SSD 120GB, CS900. Why do they call this a 2.5" SSD when it's 2.75" wide? Will it fit in a bracket designed for 2.5" SSDs?

The 2.5" form factor standard was developed for hard drives, and gets its name from the approximate size of the platters, not from the external dimensions of the drive.

Yeah, as stated already, it's a form-factor thing. We have 2.5" hard drives with 7mm, 9.5mm, and 15mm z-height measurements.

It goes back to 3.5" and 5.25" floppy disc drives. The floppy discs were roughly that size, but the drives were ~4" and ~5.75" wide.
