In regard to every day performance.

What is the desire read speed and write speed for a SSD before the return becomes diminishing for an enthusiast user.

Just so we are comparing apples to apples.
Pro User: time = money.
Enthusiast User: want high level of performance without breaking the bank
Normal User: want moderate level of performance at a budget
Granny User - a little boost in internet surfing and ms office producitivity
Platter User - internet surfing and ms office producitivity on 7200RPM Disk

Unemployed User = stick with spinning platters
Employed Users = at least a 128GB SSD of the non-sandforce variety

I think you're off target with your thinking at the moment. Some of the best, fastest and most reliable SSDs out there are also some of the cheapest. The Samsung 830, Crucial m4 and Plextor M3 can all be had for very good prices and would satisfy nearly all of the usage cases above, unless the pro user had some insane demands. I would not build, supply or recommend a PC to anybody now without an SSD as their boot drive. Even if I got another PC for my Mum who is the lightest of lightest users I would put in a cheap 64GB SSD from one of the brands above.
