SSD itch...jump now or wait? If jumping, what size? Brand? New stuff coming?

OK, after reading about these damn things for months and getting ready to build my new Core I5 system, I have an itch to buy. Should not be spending the money so I'm on the fence as to wait or buy now. I don't do much hardcore stuff with my PC other than a little gaming but I just like to play with PC hardware every once and awhile...I like stuff to go relatively fast.

Should I get one now or wait? I've read that new SSD's would be out 1st/2nd quarter (Micron for example) that are faster and should drive prices down. However, demand is so strong that I'm not so sure prices will indeed fall.

Decisions...decisions....

Buy now or wait?

Best = Intel????

Also, what size? I would like 128 to 160GB but those cost so much. How realistic is it to squeeze everything needed (not downloads, etc) onto an 80GB drive?

And yes, I've read through many threads on this forum and I'm just as confused and on the fence as ever!

As long as you do not install any games on the OS drive and keep you data on a separate mechanical drive then you should do fine. There are several applications that need gigabytes of HDD space, Microsoft Office is the most notable offender, however, in most cases 80GB is enough for a boot drive and all of your applications.

Games really suck HDD space though. My Valve games (Complete HL/HL2 series, Portal, CS:S and L4D series) take 40GB of HDD space.

I'm kinda in the same boat, I'm not worried about capacity so much as I would want two and have a RAID which will stay, but an SSD would need to be able to write somewhere near 150MB/s (sequential) to have a total advantage over regular HDDs.

From what I can tell, only the larger, more expensive drives have the highest performance and that's put me off so far. Is there any new tech on the horizon that'll push prices down for such speeds or should I just bite the bullet to get the large transfers fast too.

Newegg has the 120GB Vertex for $309.00 after coupon and rebate today....thoughts?

Pretty close to the per GB price of the Intel 80GB if buying via eBay with 10% Bing (current). However, if Bing cash back jumps to 15 or 20%, an Intel "could" be bought cheaper per GB in both the 80GB and 160GB models.

Well that price is just over what we're currently paying for the 60GB version in the UK, so seems a good deal to me, whether it'll be any cheaper soon for you chaps, I don't know.

Right now I'm looking at the equivalent of about $380 just to buy two standard 30GB Vertex drives and while I want the speed, it seems a bit steep. Knowing my luck, prices will go up in the new year.

Wait a minute, where's this $100 off coupon? Vertex 120GB is $409 after rebate so I'm assuming the coupon is $100 off.

EDIT - NVM, I looked in the hot deals forum 🙂

I think this is a pretty good deal for the prices you see nowadays. About a month ago Newegg had a huge coupon for the X25-M 160GB as well. In my opinion, all these coupons essentially return prices back to the pre-gouging levels. I have a 80GB X25-M and I have been looking for a 160GB X25-M for a while now. The only option really is Ebay unless you want to overpay for one. This coupon lets you buy from a reputable vendor for a good price. Good deal!

Are SATA 3 SSD's in the works? Will the performance increase be worth waiting for or are the currrent SATA 2 drives the way to go?

I want a 256 GB Z-Drive for under $1000 that performs as it should -- in other words, better than two SSD's in raid 0, fast random writes and reads, insanely quick boot and app launch times. Make it happen, OCZ!!
