I am strongly considering picking up an ssd for windows 7 install (technet rtm), since I am out of 3.5 bays and won't be tacking any of them out of the system (most are in the raid and I can't install windows 7 on it because its not mbr) so I think getting a 2.5 to 5.25 addapter makes sense. Does anyone have one and if you have on what do you think of it.

Newegg has these for sale but the reviews are mixed

those are extremely overpriced, and add another step between mobo and SSD... use velcro or some rubber bands... or if you have access to a machine shop, make your own.

the new intel drives hit the market, same name, but serial number ends with G2C# instead of G1. Unless there is a major drop in competitor's price, I would recommend you get one of those.

Works for me.

OP, since SSDs have no moving parts, all you really need to worry about is to stick them where they won't get in the way of anything else. Velcro is cheap, and works great. Just don't block the airflow to your other devices, and you will be fine. I also think you should be using SATA cables that don't come off easily, the ones with the little clips on them. (SATA II specs)

taltamir, looking at the new intel and possibly the vertex (not sure 80 is enough, with the price drop, $300 for the 120gig vertex might be worth consideirng over 160gb $450 for the intel), those converters are expensive (but hey can handle 4 drives so if I do end up adding ssd's in the future it wouldnt be too bad (but they are sata II so ...))

as for adding it to the case without an adapter, I probably have room (it is a big case, but with the 2 internal rads, I don't have that much space in the case for easy mounting. might be able to attach it to the outside of the 5.25 cage (seems to be about 1inch between that and the sidepanel and I doubt its anywhere near that thick).

I wouldnt get one of those cages. I bet the fans would drive you crazy, and they are completely unnecessary for SSDs. Velcro is a really good option, you can also just set it down on the bottom of your case if you aren't interested in keeping it neat.

I made a 3.5" hd fit in a 5.25" bay once using some pink erasers for support. Ought to be able to figure something out pretty easily.

My SSD is sitting on the bottom of the case. I really don't see a need to "mount" it since heat isn't an issue, and there are no moving parts or vibration. Unless you travel with your case, put it wherever you want with rubber bands, velco, or nothing at all!

Can't you just screw the SSD to one side of the 5.25 bay? Should stay in place easily.
