SSD for my old Vostro 1000

So, I'm thinking about one of these to speed up my old Dell Vostro 1000 Athlon64 X2, 4GB RAM, Win7. I use it rarely since I'm almost always on my desktop. Am I correct in assuming that pretty much any SSD will max out what the laptop can use and thus there is no real benefit in getting a higher end drive like a Samsung?

You are correct in that you don't need to get the highest performing SSD to realize substantial gains in performance.
