So I had my mom pick me up a cheap cpu mobo combo from Frys since she always in the area. (Biostar mobo/ e5200)

Anyways I will be putting together a nice little system for a buddy of mine and now I realize that SSD's are almost mainstream these days.

So do I get him a cheap SSD or go with the tried and true.

One of the problems is I dont know much about SSD's and reviews on the ones I have found are few and far between. I have gotten the impression that IBM's are best followed by the OCZ and Gskil drives, following that out with the Samsungs?

So what about ones like the Supertalent Masterdrive or Ultradrive

THe Supertalent Ultradrive which seems to be even faster than the Masterdrive and comparable to an OCZ vertex?

Newegg also is running a deal on the Cavier Black 1tb for $90 and that is tempting as well.

Give me a straight answer plz

I remember doing pretty well with a Raptor 36GB when it first came out, albeit with XP.

What is the relevance of your mom picking up the E5200? Or is that the nice system you are picking up for your buddy? Is that why the $90 deal is tempting?

A 30G drive is enough for Windows, MS Office Professional, and 1-2 games. I think back then I simply installed/uninstalled to clear up space whenever I played a new game, and used a 200G storage drive as backup for save data or crappy older games that didn't need the performance.

If you can't free up enough cash for both drives I guess I would really question how "nice" of a system you are building. Is your total budget under $500?

well if you are just asking the question in a vacuum without the basic courtesy of offering any basic information like usage habits then I'd have to say get the SSD.

As talt said - beware the "cheap" SSDs out there. Your system would be better off with an STD than a crappy SSD.

:D

I disagree...
yay, as long as it is a good one and as long as you have a secondary non SSD storage drive.

Im not gonna pretend to know much about SSD's since i dont own one, but what i think everyone seems to be over looking from the OP's questions is two things.
So do I get him a cheap SSD or go with the tried and true.
So what about ones like the Supertalent Masterdrive or Ultradrive

So i would think he's asking if a "cheap" SSD is still faster for an OS drive drive over a mechanical hard drive.
Not whether a "cheap" SSD is faster than a more expensive SSD.(which is obvious)
Since he linked to a $125 SSD.

ok, in that case NEVER EVER DO THAT...

DO NOT get him a cheap SSD instead of a mechanical drive because the cheap SSD will be SLOWER.

Cheap SSDs are trick products that try to ripoff customers, like DVD rewinders (rewind your DVD movies quickly so that your DVD player doesn't have to next time you put it in)

Ugh, 32 gb is totally useless for anything but xp. Vista will take up half of it and you're stuck with 15gb that'll hold like one or two games.

Gotta love straight foward and to the point answers. :D
And i trust taltamir's opinion since he seems pretty knowledgeable about current SSDs.
Ive often wondered this myself lately, good to know.

Mmm... i only answered half the question btw, so let me clarify before someone "corrects" me:
So do I get him a cheap SSD or go with the tried and true.

response:

what I said before... aka "ok, in that case NEVER EVER DO THAT... "

Qustion:
So what about ones like the Supertalent Masterdrive or Ultradrive
The Ultradrive ME is NOT a cheap SSD.
It seems to be an indlinx controller drive, which has good performance.

However, 32GB is just not enough. At 60+GB they are even more expensive and for the amount of work needed right now I wouldn't put it in someone else's computer.
