Hey all.

I need a little help picking a SSD for my notebook. It's a late 2011 15 inch MBP running 10.6.8 osx (this is required since some of the music software I use works best on this OS).

Currently I have a vertex 2 120gb drive in the notebook (self installed).

It's not a lot of storage and I would like to increase it. Around 500gb would probably be enough. I need enough space to be able to install large sample libraries like Kontakt 5 or similar. Some of these are like 50gb a library and my current drive just can't handle that for obvious reasons. I think that the total amount of music related software I have is about 400gb.

I wouldn't use the SSD for recording. I have an external disk I can use for that. The SSD would be used as the primary boot disk and all my applications would reside on it. There wouldn't really be much erasing/re-writing. Once the OS and applications were deployed the drive would be used almost like a read-only disk. Fairly static with not a lot of changes.

I'd like something that can equal the speed of my vertex 2 at minimum (I wouldn't complain if its faster of course), can last about 5 years as a read-only drive primarily (I would add stuff over time but it would be mostly applications) and hopefully with a 5 year warranty.

Help! Thank you.

I would recommend a Samsung 840 pro if you need the 5 year warranty.

I know you basically want it just for reading of, one thing you have to bear in mind is the Samsung 840 basic is TLC based and has a warranty for 3 years, where as the Samsung 840 pro is MLC based and has a warranty for 5 years. Just something to consider if you are thinking of getting a Samsung based SSD, good to know the differences between the various models.

Thanks.

My requirements are:
1. Reliability;
2. Durability;
3. Warranty;
4. Performance.

I think the TLC based drive is probably out since the Crucial m500 sacrifices some performance for durability and thus fits my criteria better.

It doesn't look like there is much of a choice. The Samsung as you say and the Crucial. The Samsung 840pro is around 370 sterling and the 1TB crucial is around 450 sterling. Another 400gb for 80 pounds extra. Hmmm...
