I'm talking about this screen. Which shows up empty on the PC:

SSD is a Corsair F90 90GB SandForce-1200.
Motherboard is an ASUS P5PL2-E with chipset Intel 945+ ICH7 ( http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P5PL2E/ )

I've tried several times but the drive does not show up. The SSD does however show up in the BIOS and can be selected in the boot order etc.
Oh yeah, one more thing. The installation attemps were made with win 7 on a USB2.0 16GB drive. Can this be an issue?

Is the drive plugged into an Intel SATA port (some motherboards have additional SATA ports provided by a third party controller which may not support booting)? What SATA mode (IDE, ACHI, RAID) are you running?

i just had exact same problem with ASUS Z87 Pro MB. Asus rep said bad chipset. I'll follow and see if u find solution.

Have you tried loading the SATA chipset drivers first? My wifes 775 board uses the Intel 945 chipset and every time I wipe the drive and start fresh I need to install the drivers first or it won't recognize the drive.
