SSD Dead but alive in old PC?

Hi,

On the last round of Windows Updates I rebooted my PC. That was it, I got the single beep and nothing else. I had no BIOS screen or anything. I unplugged the SSD and the BIOS screen came back. So I got another small SSD for a boot drive and installed it with no issues.

So I'm thinking the SSD is dead, the same as happen to my M4 18 months ago. I though I would just try it in my old pc as there was some info I could pull off it. It worked fine, the same as the M4 had. I guess I will do a secure erase on it and it will work fully again. For a some time?!

Regardless, what could cause these issues? Or have I just been unlucky?

Sounds like the Windows update borked something... but the no BIOS screen has me scratching my head.

FWIW, I've had issues with SSDs and my Z68 board, too (as recently as last week) but the BIOS fires up... it just can't find the OS drive.

Does your recover after another reboot? I tried the drive back as a slave drive, and again just the beep and nothing. Unplug it and away we go. Back in the old PC, it works.

Is the port that drive is working in now a different controller/speed?

Have you tried a clear CMOS on the affected computer?

Not quite sure yet what this has to do with a Windows Update, but definitely an odd issue.

Thanks for the replies. All I have done is swapped drives and reinstalled Windows. Everything seems fine now. I am just concerned why two SSDs have suffered similar fates.

But I can certainly swap ports and cables. Do all sata data cables work the same? Or do I need sata 3 cables for a sata 6Gb/s drive?

Oh. Weird.

Witchcraft.
That IS weird. I am seriously baffled at how this could possibly be. I am inclined to support your witchcraft theory.

but i have seen weirder.

I once serviced a consumer robot. the motor and the controller board were both dead. every motor connected to a controller board was immediately killed. every board connected to a motor was immediately killed. this included second gen stuff. that is.
replace motor1 with motor2, motor2 dies. replace board1 with board2, board2 is killed by motor2, replace motor2 with motor3, motor3 dies.

after quite a bit of motors and boards i figured it out and tossed the entire tainted batch.
also, before you say virus. the board and motor both got LITERALLY burned and the motor only received electric power without any communication
