I am trying to do an analysis of various HDDs and SSDs, and thus far only have one tool at my disposal - PassMark Performance Test.

Starting with freeware, what are some other hard disk benchmarking tools?

If you can suggest one that does cost $$, please note that.

Thanks!

Please checkout CrystalDiskMark.

In addition to the usual drivespeed benches CrystalDiskMark also benches random writes; a key weakness for SSD's and definitely the key differentiating performance metric for comparing SSD's.

edit: Here's what I get for my 5GB ramdisk, and here's what I get with my craptastic 500GB Hitachi.

h2benchw from the german IT magazine c't is a known (at least to those who know better than considering HDTach and similar tools as the end of all wisdom) no-frills no GUI (command-line interface for windows) benchmark tool that will provide you with every figure you'll wish for. ftp://ftp.heise.de/pub/ct/ctsi/h2benchw.zip

Its also perfect to demask the majority of currently availabe SSDs as mediocre and sub-par performers as far as random access times go.

You'll have to use the -english switch if you dont understand german (which is the default).
