I am looking for a new OS/APPS drive. If I was to go look for an SSD would Intel be the ONLY way to go or is there a cheaper one?

Also, about the ACARD ramdisk, does anyone here use one that can tell me if they recommend it? Thanks.

Currently the Intel one is the only one worth getting over a v-raptor... But Intel is gouging on price because there is no competition. If you want a SSD, keep your eyes peeled for the Micron SSDs or new JMicron controllers.

The Acard is fast as hell but also expensive as crap. You're looking at $250/400 depending on the model you get and then another wad of cash for memory to populate it to a useful level (minimum 6x2GB for 12GB will cost you about $150). So if you're willing to spend about $400 for the lower speed drive with 12GB go for it. I'd personally rather add $200 and get the 80GB Intel MLC drive.

Better yet, wait another couple of months until the new (hopefully improved) JMicron controller is released and MLC drive performance goes up across the board. Or the price of SLC drives comes down (as it surely will, just give it time).

We love having you guys around to keep facts & figures straight, make products recommendations for specific applications/requirements and for troubleshooting advice when we run into problems with your products.

EDIT: BTW, when do you guys expect the new JMicron controllers to begin showing up in commercially available drives? And are they going to fix the small random write stutters described in the AT article?
