Have a fully functional Vista x64 install, with three SATA drives - Intel SSD 320 Series 120GB SSD and an older 640GB Seagate + DVD ROM drive.

I've just realized my "PCH SATA Control Mode" is set at IDE. If I change to AHCI, I get a nice and blue SOD on boot. Changing it back to IDE allows me to go back into Windows which I am typing this from.

1) Is it worth the trouble to get AHCI working? I'll get performance increase... anything else?

2) Is this the way to go for enabling AHCI? http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?p=3508471

1) Yes you will get more speed from AHCI than IDE.

2) Yes, you have to change the registry, then reboot in AHCI mode then install Intel RST drivers.

There is an official Microsoft article on their website which supports this method. If you google it, it will also state which versions of Windows it works for.

Great, thanks. Didn't know about the article - assume this is the one!

edit - worked like a charm. Thanks 🙂 Vista detected the AHCI drivers or whatever it needed automatically so I'm not gonna bother with the Intel RST drivers for now...

AHCI >> ide, it's well worth the hassle to switch over if you accidentally installed in ide mode in the first place.
