SS7 MOBO question - AOPEN AX59PRO

I got 4 of these at a school auction, already mounted in atx cases (no ps, no cpu). I work with socketA, but never ss7. I was wondering if anyone could tell me the max chip these boards can hold. I went online and downloaded the manual at AOPEN and it said a k62-350. But, when I went to the for sale/trade section and posed the question in the statement that I wanted to buy a 350, someone gave me a link to a table that said with a bios upgrade, the board could go up to a 500 or so.

There is also a problem that I need to set the jumpers? on the mobo before I install the CPU and hsf. I have a k62-450, but the manual does not give any jumper settings for this one. Also I do not know how to install the hsf on the k62/3 series. Do you use thermal grease like the socket A??

The problem would be that in order to upgrade the bios, I guess I would need a 350 or so to get it to boot up to start with. (You can probably tell I know nothing about upgrading the bios).

If anyone could give me a link for me to do some reading or knows anything about this mobo, please pm me or post a response.

Thanks, Bruce

hello Briddle.. let me see if I can help you out..
OK well despite what the site says about the max CPU limitation, I personally have put together a machine based on this motherboard with a K6-2 550 which is currently being used right now in production. since the board and CPU came together I did not have to set any jumpers, but I'd imagine you will have to set a few jumpers, probably no more than 1 or 2 because of the multiplier. You can use thermal grease if you so wish, but it's not necessary with a K6 CPU as they don't run too hot. better safe then sorry obviously, though..

the stuff I can't help you with is, I don't know if your boards will need to have their BIOS's flashed, I'm guessing if you can get a CPU in there with the right jumper settings you should be able to get it to work without a BIOS flash, but that's the optomist in me... :D

I'll look around for some info for you and let you know within a few mins..

Well I'm back... guess where I got some info? yep, Anandtech motherboard review.. gotta love this place! :D

Aopen AX59Pro@Anandtech

on the first page, take a look at the multiplier column of the specs, it goes up to 5.5X which means you put in a K6-2 550/100
I'm guessing this doesn't require a BIOS flash at all..

and while posting the Anandtech mobo link i went onto the AOPEN site and found the mobo.. there is a jumper settings button you can click on to get the settings... this should be enough for you to figure everything out that you need.. :)

good luck!

Thanks, all help is appreciated, I have a 500 that I can try!! Since the mobo on the 500 is having major problems anyway, it would be great if I could put it into a decent mobo.

The AX59Pro is proclaimed the best SS7 motherboard.. thats it.. the best SS7 motherboard! :Q

many reviews have said this, some however don't, but when you get more than 1 place that says it's the best SS7 mobo period, it's a keeper, the one I have running where I work is used for small tasks, but runs Seti@home 24-7 without a stability problem!
great board IMO!

Well, I have 4 of them and the cases, so I am hoping that at least 2-3 of the 4 are working. I also got 3 shuttles ss7. I have not even started trying to find what kind of mobo they are. I have a bunch of friends and family that want a pc for xmas, so this would be an inexpensive xmas present for them if I can get some or all working.
