Squeeze Another 6c with a simple mod P180/182/190 case

This is so simple but works:

If you have a Antec P180/182/190 case series you get lower another 6-7C on the temp by changing the direction of the top case fan to blow inward. This case fan sits very low toward the motherboard and causes an airflow that is hard to achieve any other way. This low airflow quickly dropped all my components about 6-7C. Try it :)

Hey thanks for suggesting this! Always interesting to try a new airflow combo. I just tried it with back and top fans on low-low and medium-medium.

CPU load was generated using TAT running 100% on both cores. TAT was run for 10 minutes for each run. The values below are an average of the last four minutes of each run. Reading were taken using SpeedFan with the Core temps offset +15C.

Here are results:

INTAKE
CPU Core1 Core2
Low-Low 55.89 68.70 66.68
Med-Med 54.71 67.97 65.44

OUTLET
CPU Core1 Core2
Low-Low 56.76 69.85 67.49
Med-Med 55.18 68.70 65.70

DIFFERENCE
CPU Core1 Core2
Low-Low -0.87 -1.15 -0.81
Med-Med -0.47 -0.73 -0.26

I left a P180 fan on my Ninja running at medium the whole time. The ninja fan blows through the cooler towards the back of the case.

Conclusion for me: ~1C lower. Probably not worth it when you factor in the hassle of dealing with an unfiltered intake.

Perhaps you can provide more detail regarding your setup? Maybe you didn't have adequate airflow on your cooler before so it's adding more to it. The airflow in my case is pretty good so it may not have made much of a difference. I didn't test high fan settings because the P180 fans at high are way too loud to use.

I would be willing to try this on my 900 but I have NO IDEA how to even get to the top fan. I cannot remove the top panel no matter how hard I try. How did you guys get at this huge top fan?

Thanks

here's my factors to consider :)

MB: Abit IP35 Pro
Cooler: Ninja

I run both the top and rear fan at high.

Top fan outward:

Avg Idle Temp: 31C
Avg Load Temp: 50C

Top fan inward:

Avg Idle Temp: 29C
Avg Load Temp: 44C

Another thing is PWM

Outward Load Temp: 72C
Inward Load Temp: 50C

Another Factor:

Ambient Room Temp:

23C

And yet another factor:

On my motherboard the ram sits close to the cpu and the Ninja fan has to mount a little bit higher to clear the ram, so my 120mm lines up just slightly above the bottom of the heatsink.

Two screws outside the case toward the rear, remove them, then slide the fan backward slightly and it will drop free.
