about 2 months ago i found a deal on 200gb seagate ata100 drives. so i went ahead and picked up 4 planning to use them as mass storage (they all just sit in my server).
however since i got them, something in the computer has started to make "squeaking" noises. It sounds alot like the drive is searching for sometinhg, but just cant fnid it. Anyway the end result is that the computer crashes whenever u try to access any of the drives. I cant nail it down to a specific drive (ive tryed unplugging each one individually to see if the noise is still made). the only other thing that i did was add a drive bay insert for the boot disk, which ive removed and tryed as well.
few specs
4x 200gb Seagate ata100
ultra133 tx2 promise pci card (for the extra ide spots)
120gb maxtor (boot)
id expect the rest to be irrelevant?
Last thing is that its very sparatic. I had big issues with it until christmas when i switched back to windows and just figured it was due to the linux kernel i was using never having proper drivers. it still stuck around a tad, so i thought it might be that the drives were heating up and expanding causing the problem. so i loosened the drives some and put a fan in front of all of em to make sure theres good air flow. it went away for about the last month but has come back recently with a vengence.
ideas?
