Does the US still have squaters rights? I know a nice piece of land I would like to claim as my own. :)

Are you kidding me ?

America is the king when it comes to squating :)

I don't know about sqauters. But the Homestead act was repealed by congress in the early 70's. You could get free fereral land by making improvments to the properrty over a certain amount of years.. This was a great deal for european immigrants who, for whatever reason, got no land back home. Nowadays, federal land is so restricted they disallow hunting, motorized vechiles, shooting and going off trials in a lot if areas.

The land I have my eye on is a few hundred acres of woods in SW Florida that is only accessible by dirt roads. I want to claim it and turn it into a preserve to save it as it is. I have been looking at it for many many years and noone ever goes back there except for people target shooting and fisherman. It is surrounded by canals on all 4 sides .

The only thing I can find for squatters is the legality of them moving into vacant buildings, nothing about land.

In my state you have to live on the land and maintain it for a minimum of 15 years before you can claim it as your own.
Even then, you have to go to court which is not cheap.

And pay the taxes and the current taxes must be delinquent and even then you stand a good chance of losing.

If you want the land find out who owns it and try to buy it. Remember if you try to take something that isn't yours you are likely to get shot in some areas of this country.

If noone is using it, then why do you have to "save it"?
