Final Fantasy freezes gets class action
Square Enix
and Sony Computer Entertainment America has been slapped with a class action lawsuit because the popular PS3 Game Final Fantasy XIII game freezes and sometimes even destroys the PlayStation 3 consoles.

Daniel Wolf from San Diego, California sued claiming that the game caused severe and widespread damage since its release last March. While playing Final Fantasy XIII, consoles froze up causing them to be totally un-repairable, Wolf said. The game was much anticipated with players standing in line to buy on launch day.

When the problems appeared Sony and Square Enix blamed each other Square Enix said the console was faulty, and Sony says it’s the software that caused the issue with the consoles. Meanwhile no one is actually fixing it. More than $5 million worth of consoles that were affected by the faulty systems.

Good. I dont agree with everyone suing everyone, but in situations like this, the only way to make a big corporation actually do something about a situation is to sue. Sounds like Square Enix may be to fault here...if its just FF XIII doing this, then something is wrong with their software on some level.

So... how exactly is this game killing the PS3? Is it so demanding that it burns the chips out? Or what? Though if that's the case, can't Sony put out a firmware fix that would up the RPM on the fan or something? I mean, a bit louder is quite a bit better than a dead console...

Also, how could it be the developer's fault? They're squeezing everything out of the PS3 - shouldn't Sony's platform be usable under normal conditions no matter what you play on it? It's not like those people play their games while the console's in an oven or something... It's just a game...

I had no idea this was even happening. Guess I'm not putting FF13 back in anytime soon?

I've logged nearly 100 hours on FFXIII on my launch 60GB PS3, no issues ever came up. Guess I was lucky.

Because it's the only game that's killing PS3 consoles.

It's absolutely retarded to suggest it's pushing the PS3 to death.

The only thing I can imagine happening is the game stressing the hardware too much. See Furmark on PC.

If you have any other ideas (or someone already determined the cause), feel free to share.

$5 million worth of PS3 consoles? If you factor how much the initial price was, that's like 6-7 consoles total. That isn't widespread, more of an anomaly. ;)

BTW-I refuse to believe this.

Rename the executable (don't know if nVidia is throttling their cards when the drivers detect Furmark running, ATi does) and run it a bit more then a few seconds (like 30 minutes?). Also max AA. Not long ago ATi cards of the HD4870 series were literally shutting down from running Furmark.

Anyway, this is very off-topic. Just wanted to point out that software can overstress the hardware it's running on.

I wonder if this Daniel Wolf is a lawyer or he's just lawyered up.

Lawsuits related to gaming or technology in general always end up with the end user getting next to nothing and some lawyer getting millions. Why do people even bother.

The PS3 already has enough of that. It can get to the point where it sounds like a vacuum. ;)

I had no issues playing the game on my 40GB for hours at a time. It's not very clear if it's hitting specific consoles. Still, this isn't the first time I've heard of this kind of thing. CoD4 killed my friend's PS3, and I hear people saying firmware updates did the same thing.

Generally there's many, many more people that don't have these issues than do. I wonder if this case is any different...

Not sure if you even looked at the screenshot, but it was running for almost 14 minutes, not a few seconds. And the temp did not want to go above 54c at all.

Probably because I put a EXTREME 9800 cooler on my card.

If you like, Ill run it for an hour and post a screen shot, but it wont make the temps raise any.

I dont know how to turn on AA...but here it is for an hour of Extreme burning mode.

Wow, that sucks. Uncharted froze on me all the time. I had to return that game 3 times and every copy locked the PS3 hard. Google showed tons of PS3 owners having the same issue. No fix was ever sent out. And I really wanted to play it as t first few leves seemed fun.

What version of the console did you have? I encountered no issues on a 60GB and 40GB...trying to see if it's model specific.

Is your sarcasm meter broken? It was a pretty obvious joke at the original price of the PS3.

people in AT video were buying $600 video cards around the same time the PS3 was released. i did not think PS3's price was outrageous in that respect.
