Square 1.0 versus 0.9 pixel ratios?

I've been reading up a bit about this. We have a nice setup (Canopus DV Storm2, highend P4-based PC, WinXP, Adobe Premiere Pro 1.0) we are using in a studio for capturing footage via tape (NOT DV camera!). I'm a bit confused how to exactly set this up in Premiere.

By default, Premiere Pro (and Canopus') profiles are 0.9 pixel aspec ratios. When I export captured footage as an AVI, using the Canopus' profile, I get a stretched image. Exporting as a Microsoft DV AVI instead, also set to 0.9 (about three times as long to export), the aspect ratio looks correct. It also appears that when exporting using the Canopus driver, there is an odd issue with the contrast being way too high. However, when outputting any Canopus material directly to a tape, or a TV, it all looks perfect.

SO - what settings should I be using differently if I'm going to end up with a computer-based format, like real or windows media? Should I have captured originally using Square pixels (1.0 aspect ratio)?
