SQL 2000 connection problem

I installed client version of sql 2000 on my windows xp system and I am having problem connecting to it. When I try register my local server in enterprise manager, it gives me "server doesn't exist or error in connecting" error. I have tried both windows authentication and sql authentication with no luck. Any ideas what's wrong? Thanks
