Spysweeper about to expire. Renew?

My Spysweeper subscription is about to expire. Before I renew, is it still the best available? Are there good free alternatives available such as Avast for antivirus and Comodo for firewall in the antispyware arena?

It looks like the free version doesn't offer "real-time" protection. Is real-time protection over-rated?

Yes, my opinion it is.

Because the best realtime protection of known spyware is keeping your OS and all your applications up to date on patches, and utilizing the limited user privileges account for web surfing.

A realtime scanner isn't going to catch anything zero-day so it won't matter anyway.

Could the same be said of virus/trojans/worms? Real-time protection is overrated if you to operate as a user, keep systems/apps up to date?

Yes - if your user account only has read-only permissions to any executable, there is no entry point for a virus.

I don't run AV - but I do periodically run a scan to see if there is anything that came in on a zero-day exploit. I use HijackThis to periodically check all my startup points.

--- But I'm NOT suggesting anyone here do without some kind of realtime protection, it all depends on how technically savvy and diligent you are on system maintenance!
