questions #1)

So I've been experiencing a few slowdowns in video games and computer programs that shouldn't be happen under my system specs. this has led me to believe i have a trojan or spyware limiting my computer's potential. ive run adaware, spybot, windows defender [sucks a big one btw] and trend micro shredder.

none of them have picked up anything special aside from tracking cookies. however, every time i run spybot it says something like "error c/program/spybot/includes/trojans". i went to the listed address but found nothing alarming.

so, what the f do i do?? this is really frustrating.

question #2) i can't clear recent items. this is more of an annoyance than an actual problem, but im concerned this has something to do with the slowdown and possible system compromise.

when i right click on recent, it shows this...

no clear option!

blargh!

thanks in advance!

edit: oh, im vista btw.

intel c2d, 2 gigs, mid-level gpu.

Try running Trendmicro's housecall online virus scanner. Also, I believe Kaspersky.com has an online Virus Scanner.

It sounds like you are running spyware tools to try and detect a virus/trojan. What antivirus software is installed on your PC?

avg free edition, lavasoft, superantispyware, and spybot.

i have a few p2p programs but they're not in use and sharing feature is turned off.

avg hasn't come up with anything.

Try the Kaspersky online scanner. AVG... might not be just a coincidence that it's also the abbreviation for "average." So now try "above-average."

How about this:

1) uninstall AVG

2) install a free 30-day trialware of Kaspersky

3) go through the Settings panels and max out all the options

4) update the virus definitions (and restart the computer if it says to)

5) run a full Scan My Computer

At the end of the 30-day trial, you can right-click the red "K" in your system tray, choose "Exit," and then uninstall it. If it doesn't find anything, you might want to post a HijackThis log, because it might not even be malware that's the issue.

Kaspersky's online scanner no longer deletes/cleans. Trendmicro and BitDefender still do.

Try using your administrator account. If you are already using an administrator account. Create another fresh administrator account then. And then run a full scan with it. If you want to clear recent, maybe you can try ccleaner and see whether it clears or not.
