You'd be surprised how well a car can do with only a little bit of power. Before I bought my 914 2.0 (100 hp), I drove more than a couple 914 1.7's (75 hp) and they certerainly weren't underpowered. They weren't screamingly fast, but it wasn't like they had any trouble at all getting out of their own way. Then again, my sister's 1982 320i (1.7 litre 105 hp four with a 3-speed automatic) is an absolute dog.

Starts at $16k? I have a feeling we'll be seeing quite a few of these with shogun bumpers and combat wings.

But she's not RWD ;)

With a car that fuggin' small, I'd actually PREFER FWD; it's helps in overall packaging. I was reading in the latest Motor Trend (where the Mini Cooper S beat out the New Beetle Turbo S and the Pontiac Vibe) that b/c of the Mini's packaging and high roof that two 6 footers can sit in the back seat comfortably even with the front seats pushed all the way back.

That being said, there aren't many cars of ANY size as nimble as the Mini Cooper.

Weight, weight, weight.
914's are basically a modified, lowered Bug. In fact, I once took a 2.0L 914 motor, tweaked it to 2.4L, built the sh!t out of it to over 175hp, threw it into a stripped '69 Bug and ran 12's down the track. Fun! Fastest 0-60 of your life, let me tell ya. Of course, 175hp in >1500lbs of car is quite fast. 90hp in 3000lbs of car is dog slow.

As for the new Beemer there... must I be the first to say it? Downright fugly.

why all the hate for modified cars? not saying this is the car i'd love to use as a base, but with a little refinement and an extra 3-4k in cash, i can make it fast and pretty. for the M version (i'm guessing ~25-28k) thats still less than a low end 3 series and an extra 40hp after modding, with some tighter P-Zeroes on some nice 17-18in rims and it'll run with the best cars you can find under 50k.
i really dont get why everyone here seems to hate DIY import enthusiasts....ever thought someone else thinks we're all geeks because we're DIY computer enthusiasts? probably so, and maybe i speak for myself, but i'm not a geek and i doubt most of the people here are.

just in case your curious, i'm sporting a '96 Honda Accord with an H22 engine (out of a '99 prelude), koni coilovers, 17in rims on low profile z-rated michelins, greddy exhaust, and a few more minor mods. not sure what my 1/2mi time is now, i just did the engine transplant and got the exhaust installed. still got break everything in after it was remachined then i'll repost with some perf. numbers.

Looks a lot like the MG ZR
Not all that surprising as Rover/MG were owned by BMW when the ZR was designed.

Yet another ugly BMW. :( How do you pass on the CS1, which was quite hot, and make this pos?

Are the BMW designers smoking crack rock?

They had a good design scheme going for the past few years, WTF are they doing?

Americans may need 200+hp to haul their asses around, but not everyone does. For example, BMW's (BMW Compact to be exact) in Finland start with 1.6 liter engine producing 85kw. And this car will be smaller than a Compact.

These cars START from 90hp and go up from there. I see no problem with that.

EDIT: As to the styling. I would wait 'till we get some pics with no camouflage.

Those headlights look like they were taken of a TVR, which would be ok if the rest of the car also looked like a TVR, but on that car it only looks fugly.

Down with Chris Bangle! :|
