Can anyone tell me how good Sprint is up in NYC? How's the reception there and what other cellular phone companies are in that city? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks! 🙂

NYC has seven wireless carriers: Verizon Wireless, AT&T Wireless, VOicestream, MCI Worldcom, Sprint PCS, Cingular, and Nextel

I have Voicestream and I'm fine with it

Most people will tell you that Verizon has the best reception in the city. After all, they own pretty much all the nodes in the city. However, Verizon's plans are more expensive than most.

AT&T also does well, and has very good plans. Lots of minutes for a good price. Until July 7th i think there's a $100 rebate on the Motorola V60. Jump on this if you can. Some places will sell u the phone for $50 with an activation. So you make $50 for getting this phone. not too shabby

Voicestream has great rate plans. I'm satisfied with the reception, so no complaints with VS.

MCI not too many people like. Terrible customer service

Sprint has nice phones, expensive plans, and their reception isn't as good as it used to be. Can't make a call on these guys.

Nextel is good. they've always been good. Expensive phones, expensive plans.

I've got Sprint in NYC.
Had it for 3 years.
Good service. Cheap plans. Phone are somewhat expensive, but it depends on what you want.
I like em, and you can work some good deals.

ditto, i've had it for the past 5-6 years, excellent...service is spottier in queens now than originally...but still friggin awesome...im in the city now, and go back to queens hardly ever so it doesnt make a difference to me

I have Sprint and use it in NYC and Long Island. I even get 25% off (and free wireless web) through work but I still would not recommend them at the < $30/mo. I'm getting. Their customer service is horrid. Coverage is usually 1-2 bars on the phone (may depend on the phone, but my old Nokia didn't fare well either. Phone prices are actually decent at around $150 (without plans). I'm looking to switch to Verizon after my contract is up.

Thanks for all the replies! I'm just wondering what's going to happen when all this 3G talk actually happens.

my sister works in the city and has sprint. sometimes cant get through to her because the buildings are so high and for some reason block reception. but here in Jersey, its crystal clear.

I've used the big 3 in NYC and I like Verizon the best. My wife is using Sprint but only because it is a corporate rate and she doesn't use the phone much.

From my experience, I would rate ATT the worst. They have the worst reception and you get alot of dropped or unconnected calls. Many times, if you get a call, it will go straight to VM without even ringing. Reception is the worst in high traffic areas like convention centers, etc. It took me 60 mins once just to get a call through on ATT. I had ATT for 4 years before I finally gave up on them

Sprint seems ok. Reception seems so so but it could be just the phone she is using (who knows?) 3G is coming out in August so that could be attractive.

Verizon, a company which I hate, unfortunately seems to have the best reception. I've never had a problem with them. The rate plan I'm on seems to be the middle road between ATT and Sprint. I've been to lots of business conferences where 100's of people pile out after a meeting and pull out their phones. ATT always seems to get alot of bitching but I've always gotten through on Verizon. Never once have I had a busy signal even in that kind of environment.

I've never used any of the advanced features on any of the phones so I can't help you with that.
