I have a friend who wants to switch from AT&T today and move to a smartphone. I have Sprint, but don't know but don't know anything about Verizon. She would get the 79.99 Sprint plan - 450 anytime, unlimited mobile to mobile, unlimited data and text, no caps.

She can go with either iphone or android.

Verizon cannot compete in price.
Depends on what she wants. If iPhone, well there is one choice in CDMA world.

As far as network, I find S to be great. VZ is also great from what I hear. Both depend on where she lives. Look at the coverage maps. Keep in mind, no carrier is wonderful. They all suck at some point.

My recommendation? Go to S and get Evo or the Evo Shift. Keep in mind, the $10 charge for premium data. Still works out to be less expensive than V.

Well if she was going a smartphone on Sprint, add another $10 on to that but it's still cheaper than anyone for what you get.

What are you exactly asking to recommend though as you asked no questions other than Sprint or Verizon?

The Atrix coming out on AT&T in two weeks will be the world's best smartphone for at least six months.

Basically she hates AT&T coverage and plans. And she needs a smartphone. We live in NorCal, so 4G Sprint is getting extensive. Not sure about Verizon.

Verizon will always have a better selection of phones so if she wants to always have the latest and greatest then she should probably go with Verizon. Sprint gets its share of great phones every so often and it's cheaper for what you get even with the $10 add-on but not going to have as many awesome phones as Verizon. We currently don't know exactly how phones are going to be priced with Verizon 4G but everyone is 99% sure it's going to be more expensive than 3G phones currently are.

If AT&T coverage irritates her, Verizon is her best choice.

Now she just has to decide on a phone...

Verizon is $10 a month more, go with Verizon.

Before she picks have her check both for employee discount. I get 15% with Sprint and 19% with Verizon. It can make a big difference.

how much calling does she do? Sprint's any mobile is gold for some. I have a family plan and it works out to be a lot nicer on Sprint, enough that I'm fine w/ the phone selection (then again, I'm vying for HP to pull a unicorn out of their hats).

But on a solo plan, the price difference isn't so much if she doesn't talk too much, and Verizon might be the better choice.

Keep in mind Sprint gets to roam on VZ for voice (data too I think, but on the old data network, not 3G)

Sprint is the way to go if you want to save $120/month. If she does a lot of talking to different people then it may be even greater than that.

i live in northern california and have verizon and iphone 3gs with att. my iphone drops LOTS of calls and my verizon blackberry does not. my iphone gets quite excellent data service and my blackberry (and verizon droid) are often unable to get data for minutes at a time. verizon used to have better android phones but that wont be true for much longer. in general att has better phone and gets them much sooner than verizon. its been several months now and you still cant get the newest blackberry or a wp7 phone from verizon. att will be getting dual core 4g phones in a few weeks, a similar phone from verizon wont be availabe until summer

so im saying i dont think verizon is as good as some people say...

Blackberry's are never the latest and greatest phones, just the latest Blackberry's. This is the first time AT&T is getting a top of the line Android phone before anyone else. They have the worst Android line-up of every carrier. Now with iPhone going to Verizon, there's not much reason for many people to stay with AT&T. AT&T is so bad it has to supplement it's data towers with Wifi nationwide and even try and count it in it's "Fastest Mobile Broadband Network" now, no longer "Fastest Wireless Network".

yeah i agree bb isnt the latest and greatest, but how long did it take verizon to get bold--a year and a half after att and everyone else? when will verison get a bb6 phone like torch--a year from now? now that verizon has iphone, att will get android phones from motorola and you can be sure they will get first rate android phones long before verizon. yes att is pushing wifi but in the bay area they have faster, more extensive and more reliable 3g than verizon does and i say that as someone who has verizon and att iphone and have used many different phones on both over a long period of time. verizon 3g is really mediocre around here

I didn't see location mentioned; location is everything when picking a provider based off of service quality; esp if you do not live in a major city.

With sprint smart phones they will roam on verizon for free so with sprint I guess you get the best of both worlds. However, as other noted, sprint smart phone is very limited. Right now verizon has the best selection, followed by t-mobile. This year verizon selection is set to improved quite a bit and at&t has already announced a couple of interesting phones. Oddly sprint has announced zip (i have sprint but have held off on smart phones waiting for the 'right' phone. I do not recommend the evo due to batter life nor the epic due to bulk and samsung failed gps).

I've been tempted to switch to verizon for a while (currently have sprint) but I'm going to hold off another 6 months and see what new phones sprint offer (as well as verizon LTE pricing) and then make a decision.
