Just got my Sprint ION DSL installed yesterday. Works great with SMC Barricade router (7004) and have had not problems except trying to get into this thread. I get server is too busy message, strange that I can go into another thread and then get into the Hot Deals thread though. I didn't want to start a new thread on this but wanted to let everyone know about this. The old thread is archived and I can't post to it. Anyway, took 2 months from signing up till the install yesterday, but now I'm screaming at 1.5MB download and 384KB upload. The modem is a monster though, weighs a ton and is almost the size of a VCR, but worth it. If they still have the same deal as when I signed up, you get $50 off of the $100 price for the modem or get the modem for free with a one year contract, if you opt out of the contract during the contract, then you have to just pay the $100 for the modem. The modem also has 4 phone ports if you want your phone service also through them, I wouldn't recommend it though. If your modem goes down, your without your phone line until a Sprint Tech. comes out and fixes it or replaces it. This is a good deal for the speed you get you just pay additional $5 more than most DSL's $40 a month and you get 2 static IP's (one for each port) and 2 LAN ports on the modem (if you have only 2 computers, you can have both hooked up to the modem without a router, if you have more then you can get a router and add as many as you want.) I don't think there is a better deal on DSL out there.
Oh, and if your apt. building has more than 3 units, it's a no go, lucky mine only has 3. And just to add, this comes with a Earthlink account, I got my log in info very soon after signing up and was able to use dial up until the install. I was told by Earthlink customer service that this is not a problem as long as there is only one computer signed on at a time, so just pick up the free Earthlink disc at one of many locations, after you sign up and Sprint ION will e-mail you the Earthlink login info. I'm using the Earthlink dial-up now at work, very handy...

Sprint ION is offered in 3 flavors... 1 without any phone service at 1.5/384, another with 2 lines, another with 4 lines.

sounds like a cold deal to me. I'm getting speeds like 2mbps on cable for 39.95 a month, and I'm still having the first 2 months free!

Seriously, why would you need more than "1.5 meg" downloading/leeching unless you run a big lan with alot of action going on?

Please englighten me on what would require true "1.5 meg" /sec downstream?

Why would anyone want to stop at 1.5 megabits/s (if they didn't have to for price reasons). I'm getting up to 4.8 on @home cable (sierra has some damn fast servers 600KB/s) I usually get around 300-450KB/s. Its nice to have lots and lots of downloads on napster.

That's a good deals for DSL. Do you guys really need to shoot down all the good deals in here? And why are you guys even comparing it to cable. Not everyone have a choice between cable and dsl. So for people that only have dsl for a choice it might work out for them. Jeez bunch of uptight people in here...

Why would you need more than 1.5 meg down: Why would you want to wait 120 seconds for something when you could wait 60 seconds?

As for the speed: The Sprint ION that comes with phone lines alleges they can get you up to 8 megs/down... THAT'S what I'm really looking forward to, since when you add it all up, it's about exactly the same price I pay now for phone service/DSL.

Sorry, I didn't realize there was a 1.5 meg/version.

Anyone have the 8 meg version? What kinds of speeds do you get?

hell, this is a hot deal, but not the one he got!

The hot deal is their ion x2 offer

with 2 static ip addresses
8mb/downstream 1mb/upstream
2 phone lines
400 minutes of domestic long distance.

for 119.99

Right now I pay 7 cents a minute day and nite for ld
so that's 28.00, leavin 90 bucks

I also pay 49.11 for two phone lines at my house, leavin 40 bucks
which is what I pay for dsl service of 384/128, no static ip
let alone two.

This is a DEAL!
Sign me up so I can tell SWbell to go somewhere.

Not to get into the old DSL vs. cable argument, but I do want to hear from you cable dudes a year from now when half the homes in your 'hood have cable internet and then see what your dl speeds are.

So I call up Sprint ION and ask why I didn't get the 8MBs download and 1MBs upload and found this out. You get upto this speed and the order receipt that I have that states 384Kbs upload and 1.472Mbs download is the average when they tested the line just before the DSL modem was installed. So that should clear things up. Sprint ION is the best DSL I've seen with 8/1Mbs speeds.

WEll acutally I have both DSL (SDSL 384/384) and cable. Cable has been around in my neighborhood for over a year (i tried to get it a yr ago but there was some weird prob), so I got DSL instead, now my 1 yr contract (dec 30) is up so I've got cable now. A LOT of people around me have cable and its still damn fast.

$45 is pretty good for 1.5mbs, but i hear because of the voice service that the sprint POP is somewhere in the midwest, so no great pings.

PS Avoid COVAD if you are on the east coast, its OK on the west coast tho.

Uh, nope.........
Sprint Ion plans state that for the 45 per month
you get 1.5/384 (that is the up-to speed they'll cap you off at (especially on upstreams)

You get the 8mb/1mb when you sign up for the service bundled
with local phone service and 400 minutes of long distance
for 119 per month or 4 lines and 700 mins of long distance for 149.95 per mo.

That's a far cry from the plan you have which is really on par with average dsl,
but the two static ips are well worth 5 more a month if yer doin a home network
or hosting a site or two from the house.

hehe, if you got 8mb/sec for 45 per month, average, up to or whatever,
that would go down as the deal of the millenium and we'd all erect
a marble statue to you right in anand's front yard!

:D

Of course, Faster is always better. What I wrote was in reference to people that are upgrading to this service when they have decent service already. In essence, they are only upgrading for a mere 10, 20k/sec to their downloads?

I question doing that considering the hassles, etc.

Here's what I found out:
From LinkLINE in LA
Your download speed : 1204735 bps, or 1204 kbps.
Browsers would show : about a 147 k/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 220750 bps, or 220 kbps.
Your connection rocks .. above the 1mbit barrier!

and here is the results from MegaPath in CA (West Coast).
Your download speed : 1097450 bps, or 1097 kbps.
Browsers would show : about a 133.9 k/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 329760 bps, or 329 kbps.
Your connection rocks .. above the 1mbit barrier!

I just signed up for Sprint ION. Before ION, here is what I had.

Don't forget they give you 5 email addresses and I believe 5 Megs of web page space on Earthlink. When you sign the one year contract for $119, you get the modem free. When you sign the 2 year contract for $119, you get both the modem and installation free. They told me that installation could range from $50 to $150 depending on what you want. I signed the 2 year contract. He also said that if the price drops, you get the lower price.

Well all I can say is @home sux in TX.
Here is a test I ran this moringing, and is a typical result as I test it almost daily.

Test running..........
** Speed 738(down)/88(up) kbps **
(At least 14 times faster than a 56k modem)
Finish.

GO DSL, esp. if you plan to video conference.

@home sux? I dont think so... maybe the lines in your area sucks.
@home in NJ is nothing but great, speed test from DSLreports w/ MegaPath:

Test running..........
** Speed 1357(down)/121(up) kbps **
(At least 27 times faster than a 56k modem)
Finish.

^ And that's actually during peak hours.
