Sprint CSR told me to remove all my TCP/IP bindings to fix my DSL problem

Do they teach these monkeys anything or was he just being an ass to get rid of me? I go to their support chat because I've been having a lot of pauses and short outages lately and this was the first thing he told me to try. Just go to my network panel, remove everything that says TCP/IP and reboot.

he might have meant to renew and release your ip?

maybe?

If that's what he meant, he sure didn't say it. He said just what I put, I tried to take a screencap but their stupid chat window cut it off. After he said that I said that I thought I might need those, he just said I'd reinstall them after rebooting like it was an afterthought. Then I tried to get him to actually give me something useful to try or do by asking him what if that didn't work. He just said I'd have to come back for further assistance. That jackhole, does anyone have an adminstrative contact for Sprint?

Ok, I'm going to try sending the following to their e-mail support, but does anyone have a direct e-mail address to Sprint? I don't trust that web form they have.

For the past couple of weeks while using my DSL access I have been experiencing frequent slow response times to websites, pauses in throughput that last from a few seconds to about a minute, and outright outtages that can last several minutes or more. I have spoken to reps in the support chat who have been generally unhelpful, and my last conversation resulted in what I believe to be a rather malicious attempt to advise me to take action that would have disabled my access altogether. I'd appreciate being contacted in order to resolve these issues. Thank you.

On Win9x systems, removing and reinstalling the tcp/ip stack often solved a lot of connectivity problems. Are you using Win9x, and if so did he tell you to go in reinstall TCP/IP afterwards?

Well, did it work? 😀

I am using Win98, so if that's true I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for his intentions, but he communicated them horribly. Here's how the chat went from a combo of my memory and the screencaps (last 5 lines are verbatim.)

Him: Hi, welcome to Sprint, blah blah
Me: giving him my info & describing problem
Him What OS are you using? Are you using a firewall or any antivirus software? Are you connecting through a router, hub, or switch? Are you using any file sharing software?
Me: Win98, no, no, no
Him: Do you have your Win98 disk?
Me: Yep
Him: Click on start, seetings, control panel, network, delete all lines beginning with TCP/IP and reboot
Me: Don't I need those?
Him: You will reinstall them.
Me: What if that doesn't work?
Him: Then come back here for further assistance.
Me: OK

Then I wait for a good bit for anything else out of this guy before I leave the chat.

If you could I'd appreciate it. I'm in NC.

Unless you're connecting to other machines on a LAN through TCP, there's no reason to have TCP bound to any protocols.

Just finished a long day at work so my brain is not working well, but if I recall, when I first used SWB they had me do about what you described, and I am using Win 98. I could connect afterwards, so whatever they had me do worked. I am not techie enough to know what I was doing, so am not qualified to recommend that you do what they suggest. Good luck.

so what exactly is the problem? you uninstall and reinstall the drivers for the protocol. how does this equate to a malicious attempt to disable your access.

on a Win98 machine, that's exactly what you do do. You uninstall/reinstall TCP/IP - if it still doesn't work delete Winsock and Winsock2.

You didn't let him finish. He was gonna tell you to reinstall it.

Win95, 98, 98SE, and Me all suffer from an affliction known as "idiot programming"

This does, in fact, cure a BAJILLION different connectivity issues. On 9x, if it doesn't work - reinstall it. It's not your configuration, it's not your hardware - just reinstall the components. It WILL work.
