Sprint Broadband Hardware

I currently have Sprint Broadband and I bought 50 feet of CAT 5 to connect the computer in another room of my apartment...the thing is, it isn't working. Do any of you know if Sprint Broadband uses something other than CAT 5? That looks exactly like CAT 5? Ive tried two different cables...the only one that works is the one they gave me.
 
If you are plugging the PC directly into the device and not using a hub, you need a crossover cable.
 
ummm....why? What's the difference between me plugging my computer in with a 5 foot cable or a 50 foot cable? It's not plugged into a hub right now with this 5 foot cable.
