Sprint and Nextel Exploring Merger

That'd be sweet. I've been waiting to think of the day I wouldn't have to ditch my Sprint service to 2 way my best friend's Nextel.

i don't understand why they are merging...their two protocols aren't compatible are they? CDMA and iDEN

nope. totally incompatible. the mergers between ATT and Cingular in the US, or Rogers and Fido in Canada made sense - both of the networks used the GSM standards and they were able to integrate the networks for overall better coverage. a merger between sprint and nextel would not have any such advantages for the customers.

I've been hearing that Nextel is thinking about changing protocols - this would give it ample ability to run both at the same time. At least around here (SouthEast Ohio), Nextel rocks, and Sprint sucks. (I use Nextel service)

wall street journal had a story last week about how Nextel is close to approving a $2 billion network upgrade. If they buy Sprint then they are getting their technology and their customers.
