Sprint 4g?

There are two competing formats used for the "4G" standard, WiMax and LTE (Long Term Evolution).

WiMax is already available in select markets like Baltimore. LTE is going to be rolled out in 2010 (late 2010) by Verizon first.

WiMax is supported by Sprint/Clearwire. LTE is backed by TMO, VZW, and AT&T. (in US markets)

Yeah... Verizon EVDO is on par with AT&T's 3G speeds in most places, and they had it up and running years before AT&T did in my area.

Sprint's network is useless once you get more than 5 miles away from a major highway, though. :|

Meh, never had a problem with my sprint and I'm off the highway. No one carrier provides universal levels of coverage nationwide.

In the last three cities we've lived, Sprint's EVDO service has always been much faster than AT&T's HSDPA service. On Sprint we also get to use Verizon's network (including the EVDO) when roaming.

Google, Intel, Clearwire and Sprint have a two year head start w/ rolling out 4G wimax network vs. AT&T and Verizon's LTE 4G network.
