Learn In Your Car German is good for basics, but I've found that it only helped after I had a basic understanding of the pronunciation, alphabet, and the common words. Computer software also works well. You usually get video, audio, and text to reinforce each other.

Rosetta stone sucks donkey nuts. its not even worth the download. just take a normal class. unless you have a basic understand of the language it is going to be hard to learn the language without a native/fluent speaker to help and your skills will suck.

I've heard a lot of people say good things about the Rosetta Stone software. The effectiveness probably varies by the individual though.

Michel Thomas German

Universally considered better/faster way to learn a language than the overpriced Rosetta Stone. BTW, Michel is the foreign language trainer for the movie stars--the guy has an amazing rep., and deservedly so.

The Pimsleur audio lessons are pretty good. I've used the Spanish and Japanese ones. Both helped quite a bit, but of course neither can replace an actual class.
