Sprained my ankle. Any particular reason I should see a doctor?

I've done it before and I'd prefer not to go if they're just going to tell me to brace it, ice it, stay off it, and do rehabilitation exercises. Are there any possible complications that would warrant a visit?

Details:
It happened yesterday (Saturday, March 11) at about 11:30 AM. I know it's not broken. I can move my toes freely and my ankle somewhat without pain. I can stand normally without pain, but can't lean on the sprained ankle or walk on it. Also, I'm pretty sure I heard a pop when it happened, for what that's worth. If you need any other information, I'd be happy to provide it.

Thanks in advance!

If it happened that long ago and it's not getting worse, you'll probably be alright.

I have a weak ankle that I do that about twice per year to and I don't go to a doctor about it.

On the other hand, go to get pain killers, get a twelve pack, and take a couple days off work. FTW

It's probably ok, but you should still be able to walk around with a sprain, right? It'd hurt but I can't manage it needing crutches or hoping around.

Well, yes and no. It's certainly not good, but I CAN still move everything and if the best treatment they have is "stay off it," then the doctor won't be able to help much, will he?

Nah, I did something similar about 4 years ago and I definitely needed crutches. The doctor just gave them to me and told me not to walk on it for a while.

Hmmm... maybe there are different degrees of sprains? I've had a couple of what I believe were ankle sprains and they weren't much more than pain causing me to limp a little bit for a week or two.

Did you get a hematoma (soft lump caused by subdural bleeding, a sign of torn ligaments)? Even if ligaments did tear...ankle ligaments heal really strong if properly rehab'ed. The pop was probably ligament(s) tearing (they actually do "pop" when they rupture).

Can you walk on it if you really had to... i.e. put full pressure on it without tremendous (I want to scream like a little girl) pain? Your ankle might not be broken but there could be cartilage damage...if there is damage then this could lead to piched nerves (i.e. scream like a little girl pain) in the ankle

Last but not least...what is your health insurance situation like? Because if it will only cost a $20 copay to get looked at, x-ray'ed, etc... it might be worth it if you do have really bad pain when you put weight on it.

When i tore my ACL in my knee i heard a noise like a firecracker going off, then it really did feel like a firecracker went off in my knee. Like someone took a screwdriver and jammed it into my knee and cramed a firecracker in there 3 inches. Ohhh it was so bad.

Ok, so I'm just a big pansy. I can put my full weight on it without tremendous pain, but it's certainly not comfortable and it hurts in strange places like my shin and the inside of my achilles tendon...

I don't know about the hematoma. Honestly, I don't really know how to differentiate between "normal" swelling and a hematoma. This might be important: The sprain itself was as if I simultaneously hyper-extended and rolled my ankle. Afterwards, there was significant swelling about 3/4 of the way down my shin (clearly evident and it kinda looked like my shin was broken at first). This subsided slowly along with the other swelling.

Health insurance is pretty good. I'm at a UC and am currently covered under my parents' insurance policy. It shouldn't cost more than $40 to $100 to get it checked out. However, while I am admittedly ignorant about the subject, what could a doctor tell me other than to stay off it? That I might need surgery?

What kind of surgery could I need? <-- Not a hypothetical question!

since you're a UC, i'd go to the student clinic and hopefully get an ortho to check it out. shouldn't cost you that much as long as you have student health insurance. I don't know your symptons, but if you have a 3rd degree sprain, you might need surgery. I recently got a 2nd degree sprain and I went in and they put a boot on it and had me on crutches for 2 weeks.

But you can walk on it in a semi-normal fashion if you had to without super amounts of pain...that's important, because it means your ankle is not dislocated and there is probably no cartilage damage. One of my friends sprained his ankle so bad he also dislocated it which entailed some cartilage damage and a stress fracture. In the case of a dislocation, you cannot put any wieght on the ankle without nerves endings going totally crazy (making you want to scream in pain).

So is your ankle joint swollen along with the area above the ankle or is just the area above the ankle swollen? It is not uncommon for the shin above a sprained ankle to feel bruised. The bone can be stressed such that bruises but does not fracture.

Did your ankle buckle/roll inwards (towards the instep) or outwards? What were you doing at the time?

Are there areas that are particularly painful to press on with your thumb?

If there is no major fracture or cartilage damage you don't need surgery...even in the case of a small stress fracture you would not require a cast, AFAIK.

Sounds like you are okay...but it is always good to be sure. A mistreated injury can haunt you for life.

Edit: as far as the hematoma goes...when ligaments are torn bad in the ankle (especially the outside) the area will bleed and swell up such it looks like someone inserted a marble, or even a golf ball, under the skin....it is basically a big pocket of blood that forms from internal bleeding.

If there was/is no massive, mis-shappen swelling then the liqaments may not even be damaged that badly (just strains and/or partial tears).

Both the ankle joint and the area above the ankle are swollen. The swelling itself is rather evenly distributed, so it doesn't sound like there's a hematoma (either that or it's a very large, broad hematoma). Pressing on the damaged areas does not reveal any particular area of sensitivity. The entire ankle and lower-outside shin are tender. The inside of the ankle feels more bruised and the outside/shin feel more sore.

I'm not sure how to describe the ankle roll other than by saying it's the type I think of as the "common type" (where the outside of the foot rolls underneath the inside of the foot and stepping on it pulls the tendons on the outside of the ankle). In my case, it's my left ankle and I apparently stepped in a hole while running (at least, that's what I heard people say while I was writhing in pain).

At this point, the whole thing doesn't really seem that bad. The only thing I'm uneasy about is knowing that I heard a pop when it happened. My last ankle sprain seemed worse (read: hurt more) than this one, but I'm pretty sure I didn't hear a pop. Eh, maybe I'll go to the doctor for peace of mind, if nothing else.

I sprained my ankle about a month ago, rolled it over on its side. It happened at night and I could still limp around on it, but after going to bed and getting up the next morning, I couldn't put any weight on it at all. For 2 days I couldn't really put weight on it and used crutches. I didn't go see a doctor, other than the emergency room it takes me a week to even get a doctors appointment around here. By the third day I could finally start walking a bit again, and after about a week it felt relatively fine, still a bit stiff. Its been a month now and its almost good as new, although I still try to be careful and I can still make it hurt if I purposely stretch my foot to the side.

Anyways, I'd wait to see how it is after at least 2 full days of rest, by then you should be able to walk with it. My swelling and bruising took about 2 weeks to fully disappear.

Ice it only to reduce the pain and swelling in the first day or so. After that, heat helps it heal while ice does nothing.

I fractured my ankle last week. At first I thought I'd suck it up, but the pain was pretty unbearable and didn't subside at all. I couldn't put any weight on it either so that was the deciding factor for me. I got a boot and crutches now, but I'm pretty glad I went because it could have been a lot worse if I didn't.

Check it just in case of ligament damage. I've destroyed my ankles a few times, and once it actually caused damage to my knee as well which was never diagnosed, and still gives me problems. Pop to the doc if you get the chance.

Probably, No need OP.

If you can stand on it, it is a really slight sprain and doesn't need anything but a little time to heal. You should do exercises to strengthen that ankle though.

So I went to the doctor today, just to be on the safe side. He pushed on it in a few places, gave me an air brace ($30), and sent me home. And I can kinda walk on it today, so that's good. Looks like I'll be better pretty soon.
