SPQR

After watching Gladiator for the millionth time on TV, (along with being sucked into the History Channel over my spring break...) I have become (once again) fascinate with Rome...in particular, their legions...as I was watching Gladiator, I saw the scene where Maximus is scraping out his legion tatoo...I noticed that on all the standards that the legions carried into battle, the letters "SPQR" were written on them...after doing some research, I found out that it means "Senatus Populusque Romanus" or "The Senate and People of Rome"...I really want to find a flag that looks like this...one thing, though...is this considered racist? I have no idea...so many things these days are, and I'm just "out of the loop" so to speak...If it's not, anybody know where I can find a flag?

I think it would be hard, since at one point in time, the SPQR contained the greatest portion of land ever held under one Empire.

why would it be racist? It just means you're the property of Rome.

Who knows...down at my school, if someone holds up a cracker they're considered racist...it's crazy these days...

This is where I broke down and started laughing.

This is where I fell over and had trouble breathing.

Glad I could help you laugh, although I don't see why...I love history...my geekyness, I guess....Rome rocks...

If it's racist then someone should blow us up and let us start the country all over from the beginning again.

Sounds like fun....

OK, so we've established that it's not racist...anybody know where I can find a flag?

what exactly do you plan on doing with this flag....carry it around like the roman legions did, display i outside of your house, off your car attenna?

Why not just tatoo it on your arm?

Putting it up as a standard and forming my own legion..no...just wanna hang it up in my room...think it looks sweet...although putting it outside my house does sound like fun...all the neighbors are like, "WTF, mate!?"

I would...I'm gonna take a pic, reverse it, print it out, and sharpie it on my arm...

I hope you don't think that the Roman Legion fought in any way resembling what you saw in the begining of Gladiator. The portrayal in the movie wasn't close to reality. Legionaires wouldn't have been screaming and yelling and they wouldn't have charged in a disorganized fashion. They were the best disiplined military of the time. They were extremely well trained and organized.

Good thing it wasn't advertised as a historical documentary.

I've studied Latin and Rome etc. for well over 3 years.

And it is my educated opinion, that Silva, means forest in latin. And that V's actually sound like W's. And that is all I remember.

Carpe Diem.
