Sports with the largest increase and decrease in TV viewership, last 4 seasons...

Was in the MD's office yesterday having a followup to my back cutting and, as usual, had that loooong wait before the Doc actually entered the exam room. So, I was browsing some of the mags there....one in particular jpiqued my interest. It was a mag for VARs in computers and electronics and such. Among the articles were the "upcoming" Apple tidbits...IPod Nano, IPod Moviephone, etc. (This magazine was from June, 2005.)

But another article surrounded one televised sport and its surprising increase in popularity over the last 5 seasons it's run.....2000-2004 seasons. Among some of the statistics the story had was a graph of Nielsen ratings of TV viewership increases/decreases over the same time period of the major sports.........and it was, at least to me, surprising.

The NFL had a net Increase of 7% over that time period.

The MLB had a net Decrease of around 10% over that time period.

The NHL had a net Decrease of around 15-18% over that time period.

But the biggest loser was the NBA with a 30% Decrease in TV viewership over the 2000-2004 seasons.

Oh, the biggest winner/sport with largest TV viewership increase? Well, its increase matched the NBA's decrease with a 30% Increase over the same 5 year time period.

NASCAR.

Surprising.......and the article mentioned the largest/fastest growing regions in fan popularity were in the NorthEast and Far West, esp. California.

I am sure Poker should have gained the most viewership.. if you count it as a sport, which I don't think it should, but it's on ESPN anyway....
