Sports teams' colors. Why do they call it "Gold"?

Purdue alumnus here. They don't wear the old gold anymore. Old gold has a greenish hue to it. They wear what is called vegas gold. WF's football pants look more like the vegas gold.

I had the joy of ROTC running by yelling at 6am on Saturdays in Shreve. Wasn't that a blast. :roll:
