Sports teams' colors. Why do they call it "Gold"?

When it's clearly yellow?

I hear some guys on ESPN referring to USC's color as "gold". When I was in highschool, our colors were purple and "gold" (nothing like the gold that UW has), but it was clearly yellow.

Discuss.

And the color is clearly yellow. When I think of Gold...I think of Washington/UCLA's helmets...that's gold.

Probably cause gold is easy.

I know in high school, they used basic easy to understand colors. White, red, blue, black, gold, green, etc.

The school colors are gold and whatever but getting gold colored clothing is difficult/expensive.

I'm certain it would be gold if it were cheaper to color everything related to the school gold.

That, and yellow is a color associated with cowardice.

I'm a Wake Forest alum. Our colors have always been Old Gold and Black. The colors on the uniform (except for a nasty yellow period in the 80s) have been Old Gold and Black.

I used to ask this question all the time when I was a kid playing football and I was told our colors were blue and gold (Chargers). I still wonder why. LOL. It's yellow damnit.

Given that gold was used as reward and a sign of success and dominance in the mayan era/influence where many north american sports come from it is no suprise that gold is used in so many north american sports.

I could be way off base, but that would be my guess.

Purdue alumnus here. They don't wear the old gold anymore. Old gold has a greenish hue to it. They wear what is called vegas gold. WF's football pants look more like the vegas gold.

Gold has a more powerful connotation to it than yellow.

Gold is heavy, valued, sparkly....

Yellow is as mentioned, the color of cowards.

Symantics :)

Go Pete. I used to hate it when that mofo and the band would march right past my area. Now I revere it.

There he was with his hammar. Tromping through the street next to my dorm at wiley. That SOB, didn't he realize people were trying to sleep? And the train. Always the train.

;)
