OK, no one say shoe box....

I have a fairly large sports card collection..and my dad's gf just got me about 30,000 more at auction, so now I'm trying to organize them.. Previously I had them sorted by team....and then by year.....but if I'm ever looking for someone and don't know what team he was on in a given year I'm kind of screwed. I'm thinking of just organizing it by Last Name, First Name, then Year......anyone have a better idea, that doesn't involve a shoe box?

I should have sold my collection years ago when it was actually worth something. The steriod scandal has really taken a toll on its value.

sh*t....I hadn't thought of that. Most of the cards I got yesterday are from the early-mid 80s though it looks like

I have a bunch of Mark McGwire and Barry Bonds rookie cards which I think are now only worth a few dollars each.

I have a few thousand cards, mostly baseball, some basketball, hockey, football. Haven't looked at them in years and they're all at least 10 years old dating back to a Mickey Mantle in rather poor condition.
I wonder what they're worth.

When I had my collection several years back, I had these special boxes specifically for storing cards in, and I'd have every sorted by alphabet... best way to go, IMO

I store most all of my cards by card type and year.

Example: All 1989 Donruss cards go in one box, and I believe they are all numbered so just put them in order.

Not sure if newer cards are that way, but I know most if not all 80s/90s cards are that way.

edit: Makes it much easier to check prices in Beckett as well.

I have them orgainized by last name. For the better players, I use three ring binder sheets in binders. For other players, I generally put them in plastic sleeves and store them in card storage boxes. Of course, some of my higher value cards are in hard plastic cases by themselves.

They're in Ziploc bags in an AH-64 Apache model box. I used to keep them organized in a binder, but my cousin's cousin (no relation to me) dropped the binder, destroying three of the cards in a huge collection. I got pissed and kind of stopped taking collecting seriously at that point.

I haven't opened the box in years. I just keep taking it with me when I move.

I honestly don't think it's because of the steroid scandal. I blame the whole Pokemon/Yu-Gi-Oh craze that started around the same time. Either way my cards aren't worth jack now. :|

Make two stacks. One for the "valuable" cards, which you can set the threshold on. Then make another for the rest. Alphabetize each stack by player's last name.
