Sports Authority, the struggling chain which filed for bankruptcy in March, is weighing a sale of its assets that could be end up closing most if not all of its 450 stores.
The company had 14,500 full- and part-time employees at the time of its bankruptcy filing. When the company was bought by a hedge fund 10 years ago, it was the nation's
largest sporting goods retailer. But it has struggled with the debt load associated with a leveraged buyout.

Modells better not jack their prices... competition is always good.

Haven't stepped in one since HS. Not surprised.

40% off everything at the one by me, shoes and bikes are 2 things I"d almost never buy online. I will miss them.

The two times I walked into a Sports Authority store...I walked out empty handed because of their high prices. I get that B&M stores will usually be higher priced than on-line places like Amazon...but come on...keep it reasonable. It's not like these retail places pay their employees "rock star" wages...

Pretty difficult to compete with Academy, so this isn't surprising in the least.

The one by us looks as if it's been ransacked.

What?
You mean to say that selling a 20 dollar product for 100 isnt a good business model?

Were they Amazon'd or just poorly managed?

In this case they were so poorly ran that even other B&M stores beat them out. I'm sure Amazon always plays a part, but Dick's Sporting Goods seems to be the top competitor and there's plenty of other ones too.

Was always a pretty crappy place to shop with prices on the high side.

You have utilities and leasing to pay too. I can see B&M being a thing of the past some day, maybe even in my lifetime.

So all that will be left is one giant Dick in each city. Meh. Amazon has taken over most of my "sporting" needs. Any real technical gear I hit mom & pop shops.

Never heard of Sports Authority. Sounds like a rip on Port Authority.

Academy Sports and Outdoors is the only game in town around here.
But Dick's Sporting Goods should be swinging into the local mall soon, once they get their facilities erected. If you build it, they will come.
