Looking at a 2010 Mazda5 I noticed that it has the automatic transmission with the manual shifting sport shifter deal. I don't know much about transmissions, but I'm wondering if when I'm using the manual shift mode I'll run into the issue of the car downshifting drastically when going up hills on the highway like my corolla does. I'd like to prevent the downshifting, and I know I could do that with a manual, but my wife insists that we get an automatic.

It's still an automatic. It will up or down shift depending on engine load and RPM regardless of being in pretend manual mode.

^ well my auto wont up shift or downshift until I tell it too 🙂

The only thing it will do is downshift when speed goes down to avoid stalling.

It may or may not do that.

It may have a sport mode where it holds the gear, and a normal mode where it doesn't.

Have to go look, see, and try it...

most of them are like this now, when they first started doing it, some fo teh more conservative companies made them upshift.

but i've had a bunch of cars where it will just make the gear you are in basicaly the maximum gear.
