Sport car guru's... wtf does a Custom tune mean?

On car forums im always hearing, "the mustang now has a custom tune". I also hear "blahblah made me a custom tune and installed it through the predator".


Wtf is a tune and i know its not a tune up. Also wts is 3.73 Gears and 3.50 gears?
 
Custom burned chip for the computer that controls things like air/fuel mixture, shift points (in automatics), etc.
