Sporadic machine freezes

I?m running windows 2000 on a KK266-R motherboard + 1.33ghz thunderbird (my first home-built pc). Over the course of one month, I have been afflicted with unpredictable periodic freezes (screen frozen in place with no response to mouse or keyboard input). There does not seem to be any correlation to what applications are running (the freezes seem equally likely to occur when I'm working in an application and when the machine is simply idling with no open applications). Furthermore, they occur anywhere from a minute after startup (rare) to three days of uptime (more common).
I am really puzzled, and since I?ve had great luck with win2k on other machines, I hesitate to blame software. Could these symptoms be indicative of a motherboard problem? A processor problem? What?s the most likely culprit?
Thanks much for any input, as I am really stumped.

I hate to be a bad citizen and bump my own message... but I need to figure out what's wrong in the next couple of days before 30-day guarantees expire... thanks!

The "freeze" is indicative of an IRQ conflict. The one thing I detest about win2k is it puts ALL devices on IRQ11 and assumes they can share nicely. That is a horrible assumption IMO because there is so much hardware out there that is NOT on the compatibility list.

What cards do you have in the system and in what PCI slots?

Are you on Team AnandTech? Nice rig, we could use you! :)
