spoolsv.exe problem with Win2k

What does spoolsv.exe do in Win2k? I'm assuming it has something to do with printing because my printer disappeared from the printer's folder and it doesn't let me install it again. Does anybody know a way to fix this? I need to use my printer ASAP and this problem isn't helping any. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Actually, you can't uninstall hardware from add/remove programs, try instead go to Start>Settings>control panel>Administrative tools>Services> scroll down to "Print Spooler", double click and change startup type to "automatic" and press start...you should be able to install your printer from Start>Settings>Printers now.

Were not talking about hardware, we are talking about software/drivers. Which if you install from cdrom, will usually put an entry in add/remove programs. And if you dont uninstall it first, you cant install it again (some printers).

I went to the microsoft articles and did everything they recommended, I thought it had worked, but after I restarted the spool server, the same message popped up again. I tried doing a win2k isntall over the one that was running....but the same problem pops up again. Any other things I can do before formatting?

Hehe....I remembered that I had backed up my registry the day before I installed the Bitware software, so I used WinRescue to restore my registry to what it was then and it worked, I can now print again. Thanks guys for all your help.
