spontaneous reboot under win2k (definitely not hardware problem)

ok, the reason i know it is not a hardware problem is b/c i have a 2k/98se dual boot setup and it never happens under 98se.....anyways....

my system specs:

ecs k7s5a
xp 1700+
antec 300w power supply
radeon 7500
sound blaster live value
256mb cas2 crucial pc133
yamaha 20x10x40 cdrw
40x cdrom
WD 80GB 7200rpm hdd
using the onboard ethernet to hook to a linksys router
running sp2
IE 6
all device drivers are updated to the latest versions available

most of the freezes happen while surfing or something like that
any ideas what could be causing this?....an incompatibility somewhere maybe??

If I'm not mistaken, I believe that Win98 will only use up to 128MB of mem.

Win2k which uses a lot more ram is probably accessing a section of memory that 98 doesn't use.
Memory problems are usually the first thing to check in reboot prob.'s.

I have noticed my Win2K system spontaneously reboots on very rare occassions.... It also seems to be tied to using NetMeeting. I have only ever seen the box reboot while running NetMeeting. Dunno if it's your problem or not, but it's one I've seen, rarely (Dell P3-550 / 512MB)

Not to hijack your thread but ... 😀

What about systems that reboot after you initiate a system shutdown? I'll tell the computer to shut down, it goes through the process ... and just when you think the computer is off, it restarts! :| This happens in WinXP and Win2K.

Any Anandtech FAQ on that problem?
