Spontaneous computer power off, please help

struggle

Junior Member
For some reason my computer spontaneously loses power for no apparent reason. No errors or anything, the power just turns off. I built the computer recently (3 weeks ago) and it had been completely stable until a few days ago. The computer works fine almost all the time, but it turns off by itself. It seems to happen more when i play games, but it has happened when nothing was really running too. I think my power supply might be acting abnormally since i am not getting any crashes or errors but i am not sure. any suggestions before i buy another power supply? thanks
specs:
800 thunderbird
300watt atx (generic)
abit kt7
leadtek 32meg ddr

Sounds exactly like power supply. Mine went the same way. I thought the wife had turned it off. A week later it happened again, with no one in the house. Next thing ya know it happened with me there. Then I could get it to hardly turn on. No rhyme or reason.

Good luck

i am currently experiencing this same problem also. everything runs fine and then WHAM! out of nowhere, the whole system shuts down. i notice that this tends to happen more when i play games and when i am online surfing, but if i were to use the computer for more productive purposes, like schoolwork or tracking my banking/finances, it runs ok. is god trying to tell me something? 🙂

Do you have the computer plugged directly to the wall? If so get a surge protector if you have one and its one of those 5-10$ jammies then get a real surge protector. I've had lots of friends with this problem and most needed a better surge protector not a new PS. Not that it can't be PS. I would try SP it's easier.
