Was wondering what all the fuss was when I was watching this story on CNN about a 28-year-old soldier (who was murdered) and her headstone. Apparently, the cemetery had second thoughts about the headstone due to its content.

I thought to myself, how bad could it be, then I saw the actual headstone and couldn't stop laughing my ass off. No disrespect to the deceased soldier, but damn!

Eight months after an Ohio Army sergeant was murdered, her family is now dealing with blowback over the way they chose to honor their lost loved one.

The controversy around 28-year-old Kimberly Walker's grave site surrounds the choice of gravestone the family chose to install. It's shaped like the popular cartoon character Spongebob Squarepants, a character Walker's family says she loved.

However, just a day after the Spongebob headstone was installed at the Spring Grove Cemetery earlier this month, officials from the cemetery called the family to tell them that it had to come down because it wasn't appropriate.

"She loved Spongebob, and he went everywhere from the curtains to the shower," Deborah Walker, Kimberly's mother, said. "Spongebob went in her casket before we laid her down in the ground."

Walker was murdered inside a hotel room in Colorado on Valentine's Day after serving two tours of duty in Iraq. Her boyfriend is charged in her death.
The family is especially upset because it was officials from Spring Grove who themselves said they could go ahead with the Spongebob grave marker in March. They then ordered the $13,000 stones and had them installed Oct. 10.
Each of the cartoon character headstones is depicted wearing a military uniform.

"I thought it was the greatest thing in a cemetery," Kara Walker, her sister, said. "I even told the people there (that) I think this is the best monument I've ever seen, and they all agreed."

Spring Grove Cemetery's president says that the community feels "horrible" and that they apologize for the problems involving the monuments. In a statement, cemetery officials said that despite choosing the headstone with guidance from Spring Grove, it ended up not fitting within the cemetery's guidelines.

Officials say that they will pick up the costs of replacing the headstones, but that might not be enough for the family.

"We all feel like Spongebob should stay there," Deborah said. "That's what we wanted."

Yea I am laughing at this also.

Figured it was just the name in the quote or something like that but to make the entire gravestone to look like it is beyond tasteless in so many ways.

Also why would you use 2 of them?

The other is for her (still living) twin sister.

Yeah, okay....it's odd.

But if the family is happy with it, they shouldn't be told they can't do it.

I guess I could understand a spongebob carving/stencil on a traditional headstone...

But this is just over the top comical and tacky. It would look out of place. It'd be like showing up to your mom's funeral wearing a lime green suit and a bright orange top hat -- only you didn't just show up at the funeral for your family member, but for every family that buried someone at that cemetery.

If that's what the family wanted then I say go for it. Though, they are a little on the big side. If they had made them the standard size wonder if they would let it go.

Let them stay. For those that say they are out of place, it's a place full of dead people and people going to remember the dead people, how does Spongebob ruin that?

The people chose to be remembered this way, and it should be honored, by everyone.

And just the idea of a Spongebob headstone in that manner...

It seems like one of those things that they'd put in the "Headstone Catalog" just to fuck with you. In other words, you wouldn't think anyone would ACTUALLY choose it and buy it; until that ONE strange person just takes you up on the offer. And the company is left saying, "WTF, we actually have to go through with this?" :)

A cemetery is usually such a sad a dreary place. I think seeing something like that would lift my spirits a little. I wouldn't mind it at all if it became popular add a little irreverent humor to gravestones.

wtf, now we have HOA for cemeteries?

Yup the cemetery my grandparents are in has strict rules but the cemetery my parents are in pretty much anything goes. The family should have asked the cemetery staff before putting up those headstones.

What? Looks like they did ask.

Ya, I'd be pissed to if I was them.

They wouldn't just be covering the cost of new tombstones that's for sure. They would either stay up or get moved to a different cemetery and those bastards would flip the bill for every last dime of it plus some.

As far as the whole spongebob thing goes, who cares. It sounds like something she would've wanted and maybe even asked for before she died.

personally I think it's tacky as fuck, but the cemetery had their chance to protest the installation, let alone not help them in the first place, but didn't until it was too late. Too bad for them in my opinion, they had their chance to stop it.

The entire concept of cemeteries and elaborate/expensive holes to bury things is beyond bizarre to me.
